Underwriter
Summary Description
This position has responsibility for coordinating the
renewal and new business stop loss marketing. He or she will
be responsible for following up with carriers in obtaining
quotes, producing spreadsheets, and completing the renewal
paperwork for the chosen carrier. The underwriter will work
with Account Managers, carrier underwriters, sales
personnel, agents, and group contacts to successfully renew
business.
Must Know and Understand
• Internal policies and procedures
• Must be proficient in knowledge of stop loss policy
provisions and how they can affect the client
• Must be able to analyze and interpret plan data and
effectively communicate the data to carrier underwriters in
order to negotiate stoploss renewal
• Must be familiar with state and federal laws and resource
materials as they pertain to employee benefits
• Must be able to travel occasionally
• Must be able to assist account managers and sales
personnel in presenting and explaining renewal terms
• Must be able to properly interpret plan documents and make
revisions and amendments as necessary
• Must understand claim processing procedures
• Must be proficient with the use of Microsoft Office
applications
Responsibilities:
• Assist in preparing, organizing, and improving stop loss
renewal marketing packet
• Develop and maintain excellent relationships with stop
loss carrier underwriters and/or sales representatives
• Follow up with carriers to ensure the timely submission of
stop loss quotes
• Check all incoming quotes for accuracy, completeness, and
fairness
• Negotiate renewal quotes to make sure B-C presents the
best renewal available to our clients
• Coordinate and complete all renewal paperwork, including
but not limited to: application, binder check, and
disclosure statement
• Maintain data on each carrier regarding number of groups
sold, premium, loss ratio, etc
• Provide feedback to carriers in order to work more
efficiently and effectively
• Provide input on plan design as it relates to stop loss
underwriting and how changes can affect underwriting
• Must follow all internal policies and procedures including
those in personnel handbook, procedure manual and memorandum
• All other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• High school education or equivalent with college or
related education
• Minimum of 4 years of stop loss underwriting experience
• Client relations experience and excellent written and
verbal communication skills
• Organizational skills essential
• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
